Chip tuning

Chip tuning or re-mapping refers to the changes made to the software within an electronic control unit (ECU) to improve performance.

The ECU in a modern vehicle, together with advanced engine technology, makes it possible to control many aspects of an engines operation. The ECU monitors and controls various functions including: throttle, ignition timing, boost control (in turbocharged engines), ABS, automatic transmission, cruise control, electronic stability control system, etc.

Most manufacturersV6 Engine tune for optimum emissions and fuel economy, which can limit performance. Both fuel economy and performance can be improved, as manufacturers programme ECUs to work in a relatively balanced way that will be a happy medium for all drivers. Improving the ECU maps by tailoring to the individual car is where a specialised increase in performance and economy comes in and not everyone can do it properly.

Another reason to modify the ECU mapping is to accomodate engine hardware modifications (e.g. after market turbos, exhausts, intercoolers, etc). The full potential of these 'bolt-on' modifications will not be realised without a well tailored re map.

A poorly tuned ECU will result in decreased performance/efficiecy, poor driveability and may even cause engine damage.

The best and safest results will be achieved by using specialist tuner who has the experience necessary to make the right changes to your vehicle. HEXUP are here for that very reason. Why not take a look at our vehicle list to get an idea of the levels achievable. If your car isn't listed, please give us a call or E-mail us from our 'Contact Us' page and we'll be more than happy to let you know what we can do for you.
